DENMARK, S.C. — The Center of Excellence for Educator Preparation and Innovation (EPI Center) awarded a collection of literacy books and reading resources to the Palmetto Works CDF (Children’s Defense Fund) Sankofa Freedom School in Horry County. The EPI Center’s contribution anchors the Freedom School’s literacy initiative, reinforcing reading as the foundation of academic success and lifelong empowerment.
Providing young scholars with literacy-rich texts is a proven intervention to support literacy. By infusing the Freedom School with these curated resources, the EPI Center is helping students build permanent home libraries. This ensures that their intellectual growth and curiosity continue after the school day ends.
Franklin Gause is the Project Director for Palmetto Works CDF Sankofa Freedom School, which is a program arm of Palmetto Works CDC. “When children connect with the characters and stories reflected in the pages of a book, it unlocks a profound sense of possibility, pride, and self-worth,” said Gause.
EPI Center leadership emphasized the broader impact of the initiative. “By helping these scholars build their own personal libraries, we are doing more than supporting academics; we are giving them the tools to understand history and confidently advocate for their future,” said Dr. Tondaleya G. Jackson, Director of Engagement and Outreach.
The impact of the donation materialized immediately as books were seamlessly integrated into the students’ daily routine. During “Drop Everything and Read” (DEAR) time, students engage with texts purely for pleasure, keeping their minds active without the pressure of graded assignments. Designated “Solo Time” further provides young readers with a vital space to become more confident and independent learners who can read challenging material and personally reflect on it.
