Nominated by a fraternity brother from Phi Beta Sigma, Inc., Dr. Barnes earned this recognition for the passion and dedication he brings to curriculum and instruction daily in his classroom.
“Becoming a teacher has always been my dream, and I am honored to serve my community through meaningful learning experiences. This recognition is a reminder of why I take such pride in my work and remain committed to empowering students through literacy,” said Dr. Barnes.
Beyond the classroom, Dr. Barnes also serves as a Virtual Instructional Coach for the EPI Center, where he has conducted powerful, Improvement Science-based research focused on maximizing academic achievement among marginalized students. Dr. Barnes applies these same strategies in his classroom to drive instruction, monitor progress, and raise student achievement. The EPI Center supports K–8 ELA teachers in using research-based literacy strategies. He shares his knowledge regularly with colleagues at various events.
He is a 2012 graduate of Barnwell High School. His academic journey includes earning a B.A. in English Literature from Allen University (2016); an M.Ed. in Teacher Leadership from Strayer University (2019); a Doctorate in Curriculum & Instruction from Capella University (2023), and a Master’s in Educational Leadership from the University of South Carolina (2025). Dr. Barnes is also pursuing his Ed.S. in Superintendency at USC.
